HIGH EXPECTATIONS

As we start the process to choose our new student leaders for 2009 – 2010 for our Prefect body and our Student Representative Council I have been reminding all students of the importance of meeting all of their obligations at school, in order to be eligible to stand for leadership positions.  Obviously we want student leaders who:

  • Apply themselves with diligence to their studies.  (If they are not coping here, we don’t want them being distracted from their studies by taking on other duties and obligations.)
  • Have a good attendance record and ensure that they have any absences explained by way of a note from their parent or guardian.
  • Attend in full school uniform (so that they are good representatives and role models within and beyond the school)
  • Demonstrate respect for others and uphold the good name of the school.

A few students in our school have not been meeting their attendance obligations – in relation to class attendance and attendance at sport, or applying themselves with due diligence. Teachers have been forwarding letters home to parents and guardians to inform them of our concerns.

If you have any concerns for your child please contact the relevant year adviser or deputy principal to follow up on any concerns.

We have also been working with our local community to ensure that our students are behaving in an appropriate manner in the community which includes: on the buses, in the local shopping centers and in the street.

STUDENTS DRIVING TO SCHOOL
I would remind all parents who have a child who has a drivers license and who is driving to school, the student needs to lodge a Driving Permission form with Ms Kamasz.

Students need to be very careful driving around near to the school to ensure the safety of our students and those in our local primary schools.

YOUR TUTOR
We have received our first reports from Yourtutor.com.au which indicates that the system is working well for those students who have accessed it so far.  The greatest level of interest at this stage is in Year 7.  Congratulations to all of those students who have shown such initiative.

Any students who are new to the school and have not received their password – need to report to the school I.T. team to obtain one.

TECHNOLOGY IN THE SCHOOL
During the holidays our DET wireless internet was installed in preparation for the roll out of the student laptops for all year 9 students later this term.

YEARS 8 AND 10 SUBJECT SELECTIONS
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the student information night.  A Reminder that the year 8 into 9 forms are due to Ms Van Gogh on the 13th August and the Year 10 into 11 forms are due to her on the 17th August 2009.

STUDENT ENROLMENTS FOR 2010
At this stage we have now completed first round offers for year 7 placements and will start a limited number of second round offers next week.

For all other years we are currently only offering enrolments for “In Area” students who can show proof of address, that they are in our local area.

STAFFING
Welcome to Ms Abby Jeffery to our HSIE faculty for the remainder of this year.

Congratulations to Mr Phil Webster who is now in the final stage for a NSW Quality Teaching Award.

PARENTS AND CITIZENS
The next P&C meeting will be discussing the schools Good behavior policy.  In addition there will be discussion about the funding of several future projects:

  • The installation of data projectors and e-beams (like our interactive whiteboards) in any classrooms that do not have these facilities.  This will have all of our rooms with the latest technology prior to the laptop program starting
  • Increased dry spaces and seating for students
  • Possible expansion of the library to be investigated
  • Possible development of additional teaching spaces in a mezzanine space in C block (above the open space of the canteen area)

REMINDER
Your P&C contributions are what makes a great difference to the quality of facilities that we are able to offer students here at Killarney Heights High.

CONGRATULATIONS AND GOOD LUCK TO THE FOLLOWING TEAMS AND INDIVIDUALS

  • Our Open Touch Football Team who had a win at Tweed Heads last week and are now down to the top 10 in the state.  Well done to the team and to their coach Mr Collins
  • Nicole Cooper has qualified for the 2009 Australian Short Course Open Age Championships in Hobart from 8th – 12th August.
  • Nathan Wong has been selected for the NSW Combined High Schools Touch Football Team
  • Christopher Theseira is competing at the NSW CHS Athletics State Championships in Long Jump on 3rd September.
  • Our Model United Nations Team will be competing in the National Competition in Canberra on the 15 – 16 August.
  • The Mock Trial Team is competing agaist St Mary’s Cathedral school in the KHHS library next Tuesday from 4.30pm
  • Our HSC Music 1 and Music 2 students and Drama students performed very well for their practical assessments last week.

I would like to wish all Year 12 students every success as they prepare for their Trial Higher School Certificate examinations in school over the coming two weeks and to those Year 12 and Year 10 French accelerants who will be completing their HSC oral examinations this month and to those students who will be submitting their HSC bodies of work for Design and Technology, Visual Arts, English Extension 2 and their Personal Interest Project for Society and Culture.

DON’T FORGET THE “BACK TO THE FUTURE” DANCE for parents and community members is coming up on Saturday 5th September.  It is $25.00 per person with prizes for the best table decorations and best costumes/best theme dress.

Get your table group organized and buy your tickets from the office.  The music is supplied by the well renowned “Brass Boyz”.

Check the P&C notices for all details.

I will be on a Department of Education and Training delegation to China with a representative from the International Student Centre from 12th – 24th August.  This is part of the DET’s promotion of quality public education in NSW.  Whilst we are not seeking to recruit additional students for our school, this will inform agents and parents and prospective students about the opportunities in NSW schools. We are also investigating the possibility of establishing a Sister School relationship with a Chinese school as part of our school’s future direction in creating stronger international links that will benefit the teaching and learning for all students – not only our LOTE students.

It is my hope that in the next few years we will establish a Sister School in China, Korea, Japan and France.  With the increasing use of video conferencing in NSW schools we may be able to use this facility to link with our Sister Schools in real time – to share learning opportunities.

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS REPORT

Term 3 is a particularly busy time. We have started the process for the election of our student leaders for 2010, Prefects and Student Representative Council and I would encourage all students who feel they have the commitment, motivation and skills, to nominate for a leadership position. A great deal of the success of our school is due to the value we place on student and family engagement and involvement in the school. Our current leaders and their mentors,  Ms Anne Hardy and Ms Katherine Reid  have set high standards in leadership and we do thank them for all their time and effort this year. Good luck to all  those nominating.

It has been disappointing to see that a number of our students are not following the school rule re scooters and skateboards. I would remind families that they are not to be brought to school under any circumstances. Killarney Heights High has  excellent partnerships with local businesses and community services and I would also like to remind students that they must represent our school well when travelling to and from school. Respectful and safe behaviour at all times by all students is our expectation.

Good luck to year 12 who have their  trials next week. This is a great rehearsal for the HSC exams themselves but also an excellent opportunity to assess where their energies need to be directed in order to be successful.

CAPA REPORT

Congratulations to the Year 12 Drama, Music 1, Music 2, and Music Extension students who presented their performances for their trial examinations across evenings last week. Teachers of these classes were impressed with student improvement so far and have some useful feedback to help prepare for the coming HSC exams.

Just a reminder that we have particularly busy weeks ahead of us for HSC students in Creative & Performing Arts;  Drama HSC Practical examinations beginning week 6, Visual Art Bodies of work due week 7 and Music Compositions and Performances during week 8.  To highlight the talent of these students, plans are in place to once again hold the annual HSC Showcase on September 11.

It is essential that students studying these subjects are not only working to the best of their ability to achieve their personal best, but also that they look after their health during this stressful time. The CAPA staff wish all the students the very best during this term and encourage them to continue working hard.

World Vision says ‘Thank-you’ to the KHHS Year 12 Class of 2008

Killarney Heights has recently received a Certificate of Appreciation made out to the ‘Year 12 class of 2008’ who ran numerous fund-raising activities to collect a total of $511.58 to donate to people in our world less fortunate than themselves.

The money was donated through World Vision’s ‘Multiplying Gift Appeal’ which means that, through its partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme, every $1 donated by our students, will be multiplied by 10! So from the $511.58 raised by our students, in fact $5115.80 worth of aid will reach desperately hungry or suffering people in our world.

So, if you see any of our past students from the Class of 2008, please pass on the thank-you from World Vision.

M. Cunningham (Year Adviser KHHS Class of 2008)

P.S. Visit http://www.worldvision.com.au/OurWork/Solutions/tentimes.aspx

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS

It is now time to relax for a while and reflect on what a wonderful achievement “Little Shop of Horrors” was at the end of last term.

With only 2 weeks to go, I had students come up to me and say “How’s it all going to get together in time”? I must admit I had my doubts too, but if there is one thing I know about the theatre, it will be alright on the night. All students put in a huge effort wether it was learning dialogue, singing 3-part harmonies, turning on microphones or playing guitar. The plants arrived only 6 days before the opening making for some quick learning. In the end there were three performances to over 700 people including a matinee for KHPS and FPS.

It was a huge effort for all the students involved and thanks must go to Phillip Wood and Katherine Reid who have come to school on the weekends to help coordinate rehearsals and a huge thank you to all those students who came up to me saying how much they enjoyed being in the musical and look forward to being in the next one.

INTERNATIONAL DAY

On Monday, 7th September Killarney Heights High School will hold its annual International Day. The purpose of this event is a sharing of cultures, enabling students and staff to learn about and experience the range of different cultures within our school.

The school routine will be varied so that students can participate in various cultural activities as well as an afternoon concert. Normal lessons will, however, operate for much of the day and students are expected to bring equipment for those lessons.

Professional instructors have been engaged to assist students in learning a variety of new skills. Students will be charged $5 each (to be collected in roll call on Tuesday, 1st September) to cover the cost of this instruction.

A diverse range of International food will be available for students to purchase at lunchtime and drinks will be on sale at recess. The school canteen will only operate on a very limited basis on this day.

Students are requested to wear international dress on this day as the theme for 2009 is International Entertainment.

BOYS’ TOUCH FOOTBALL FINAL 10 IN NSW!!!

On Thursday 30th August the Boys’ Knockout Touch football team travelled to Kingscliff on the far north coast to play their Round 6 game.

It was a very excited team that arrived at the airport at 7am to fly to the Gold Coast for the day.

All transfers went smoothly, and the team had plenty of time to warm up prior to the 12:45pm kick-off.

The game was of a very high standard and was extremely close all the way through.  Neither team was ever more than one try ahead.  The scores were locked at 6-6 with just over a minute to go when Garth Ambrose gave a beautiful pass to a flying Alex Northam who touched down for what proved to be a winning try.  The boys went crazy and were on a real high on the trip back that afternoon.

Everyone had a great game, with special mention to the Captain Nathan Wong who ably lead the team  around the park and put on some brilliant individual plays.  We are now scheduled to play in the State carnival on 17-18 August in Gosford, with a real chance to finish high up the rankings.
