STARS ON STAGE

Last night we saw the return of musical theatre to the stage at Killarney Heights High School after a 4 year gap.  Congratulations to Mr Wood and Mr Evanoff for their vision and dedication to Direct and Produce “The Little Shop of Horrors”.  Our star performers Lucas Moctezuma, Kelly Radovanovic, Johannes Michael and Sean Sadimoen were excellent, as was the whole ensemble cast.  The live music was another highlight of the show.

If you didn’t see it last night there may be a few tickets left at the door for tonight’s final performance.  Come along and join the fun.

Parent dinners
Thank you to all Year 9 parents who made our parent dinner such a success last month.  I look forward to seeing many of our year 10 parents at the Parent Dinner on Thursday 30th July – at the School Common Room at 7.00pm.

Your Tutor
Our online tutoring access codes will be delivered to all students on Monday period 2.  We had a delay due to some of the DET computer systems being unavailable for 3 days the week prior to our anticipated launch this week.  Hopefully all students will be able to log-on during the last week of term to investigate this new facility to help them with their learning.

This should save parents a lot of difficult questions at home and enable students to be more independent learners.

School Reports
Thank you for Mr Page and Mr Murphy and all of the teaching staff and Year advisers who have been very busy finalising half yearly reports.  They will all be issued to year 7 – 11 by the end of next week.  Any student who is absent will need to see their year adviser to obtain their report.

FOR YOUR DIARY
The P&C are organising an exciting dance night for parents on 5th September 2009.  Please get your table group organised and plan your dance theme.  There will be lots of prizes and a great night of live music from the fabulous Brass Boyz.

REMINDER
School resumes for everyone – staff and students on Monday 27th July 2009.

All students are expected to be at school every day next week.  I would also remind parents to ensure that their child/children have delivered all absentee notes to the school.  We are trying to get all of our attendance records up to date.

We are also reviewing our Fractional Truancy policy as part of the school discipline and welfare policy.  If you would like to share your thoughts on these policies – please come to the next P&C meeting on Monday 17th August.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy mid year break.

CONGRATULATIONS

SCHOOL BASED APPRENTICESHIP AND TRAINEESHIPS

Are You the Right Person for a SBAT?
Were you aware that school students could commence an apprenticeship or traineeship while completing Years 11 and 12?  (SBAT = School Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship) A Traineeship can be completed over two years so it is finished by the time you get your HSC, while an Apprenticeship is completed over five years – two years at school, three years after.
What is your commitment? All SBATs require you to go to work and to study. For example, a tourism Trainee may go to work in a travel agency one day a week and study a Certificate II in Tourism at their local TAFE on Tuesday afternoons. The number of days in the workplace over the two years does vary from 100 to 180 depending upon whether you are doing a Traineeship or an Apprenticeship and on the type of job you do. To complete these days you will have to work for part of your holidays but you are being paid a training wage.
What do you get out of it? Firstly, dual accreditation, that is, a minimum of 2 units from your training in Year 11 and Year 12 and an industry recognised qualification, such as a Certificate II. Secondly, a wealth of experience, from the formal training and from the workplace. Finally money, you are paid a legally recognised training wage for all days in the workplace.
The right person wants to work in a particular job or industry but still get an HSC. They have the maturity and ability to balance school, study, assessment, work, training and social commitments.
If you are interested in a SBAT visit your Careers Adviser, they can provide you with more information including a list of Traineeships and Apprenticeships that are possible in your area and an Expression of Interest form, on the net check the School Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship site www.sbatinnsw.info .
