GREAT RESULTS FROM
YEARS 7 AND 9

The NAPLAN results for Year 7 and Year 9 2009 were very high.  I would particularly like to commend the year 9 girls for their exceptionally high level of achievement in the writing section of the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy, where they were on regional average.  Whilst our school was well above state average in every section of these national assessments, the average results in across the Northern Sydney Region were even higher again.  This is due, in part to the large number of academically selective schools in the region.

The fact that we had school results that mirrored the very high regional results in any section of NAPLAN, is worthy of great commendation and celebration.  I would commend al of the students who applied themselves with diligence to these assessment items and to the teaching staff who have worked in every key learning area to help improve literacy and numeracy results.  This is not only the work of our English and Mathematics teachers but a responsibility that goes across all teaching areas.

I would however, particularly acknowledge the work of our English teachers who have put in a lot of additional effort to improve the narrative writing skills of our year 9 students.  This was an area that was not strong in last year’s results across NSW and is one where our school had demonstrated highlevels of achievement in 2009.

To any parents who have not received the NAPLAN results  for their child………they were distributed to the students on Tuesday of last week.  The year advisers Ms Suttle – for Year 7 and Mrs Cheney – for Year 9 have any remaining results.  Both year advisers are now back from the year 9 camp and available for any students who need to collect their NAPLAN results.

KILLARNEY HEIGHTS HIGH WILL BE FEATURED ON CHINESE TELEVISION
This week we had a film crew from Guangdong Television in conjunction with Australian Education International – attached to the Australian Consulate – General in Shanghai visit out school.  They interviewed five of our International Chinese students: Karen Shao, Snow Li, Donald Luo of Year 12 and Kames Wang and Wanting Zhang from year 10 as well as the Dux of school from Beverly Hills Girls High School who has been sending articles back to a Shanghai newspaper about her experiences as a student in Australia.

The above photo shows some of the film crew and our students in conjunction with representatives of the DET International Students Centre – Ms Elizabeth Webber the Manager of DET International and Mr Chris Wen who is the North Asia consultant for DET International.

I would like to thank all of the students and staff who contributed to this positive promotional opportunity for our school.  As previously noted KHHS was the only DET NSW school to be selected for  this 6 part series focusing on the experience of Chinese students studying in Australia.  Most of the emphasis was on the University sector but we look forward to positive segments relating to DET schools as well.

We were very thankful the rain held off on Tuesday for the filming and that the dust storm had not arrived at that stage.

On Wednesday we all felt as if we had been transported to Mars.  It certainly looked like the red planet rather than the blue planet on Wednesday. Due to the high level of dust in the hall – because the smoke ventilators had been open over night, we have rescheduled the 2 unit Mathematics and General Mathematics examinations to the last day of term – Friday 2nd October 2009.

A REMINDER TO ALL FAMILIES
Students are expected to be at school every day in the coming week.  Meaningful class work will be occurring every period – with the exception of the time for the Assembly to farewell Year 12 on Thursday morning – commencing at 9.00am.  It is expected that all students will attend on Thursday to farewell our HSC class of 2009 and wish them well for their forthcoming examinations.

This week will also see a lot more revision for year 10 students in particular as they prepare for their Trial School Certificate examinations at the beginning of next term.

YOUNG TOASTMASTERS CHAMPIONS

I would like to thank the Forest Toastmasters Club for their ongoing efforts with training Young Toastmasters in our school in the art of public speaking.  Particular thanks to Toastmasters Derek and Brian who have been doing this for many years.  Congratulations to Karen Shao who won the Young Toastmasters public speaking competition and to Johannes Michael who was the runner up.  The speeches from all participants were outstanding.  Johannes also received the perpetual trophy for his ongoing contribution to the Toastmasters program over the past 12 months.

I am also pleased to be able to send a photo of Karen’s win to her mother in China.  I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs Shao last month in Beijing.  She is in the above photo – on the right hand side, adjacent to Professor Piao (professor of Korean language at the Central University for Nationalities in Beijing)– mother of Min Li in Year 12.

Karen’s speech will be included in the forthcoming school magazine.

Congratulations to Ryan Harris who has been selected for the NSW CHS Boys state carnival for tennis from 3- 5 November 2009.

Thank you to our Environment Team in conjunction with Mr McGinness who have been working on planning more native vegetation in our school conservation area.

Please support Just So Stage Artz at Glenn Street Theatre – the ad is below.  One of our own students Isabella Grillo of Year 7 is one of the performers and all funds raised are going to the Children’s Hospital.

We will publish one more short e-news next week to finalise the term.
