HIGH ACHIEVING TEACHERS IN A HIGH ACHIEVING SCHOOL

QUALITY TEACHING
Mr Webster of our Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) Faculty is to receive a NSW Quality Teaching Award at Government House on Friday 13th November 2009.  This is in recognition of his excellent classroom practice and his contribution to the teaching and learning of young people in NSW secondary schools.  The process to achieve this award is acknowledged as one of the most rigorous  in the country. This is an outstanding achievement.
SPORTS
During the holidays we had a lot of exciting news for our staff. Mrs Binder of our Mathematics  faculty won a Gold Medal in Basketball as part of the Canadian team at the World Masters Games, Ms Van Gogh won a Bronze Medal in Netball and coached a Gold Medal winning team in Netball.  Congratulations to these outstanding athletes.
NEW HEAD TEACHER PDHPE
Congratulations to Ms Parry who will be the new Head Teacher for PDHPE from the beginning of 2010.  As our school has grown, we have been able to appoint an extra Head Teacher for 2010 and the school’s decision was that this new position should be in PDHPE. I know that all of the students and staff wish Ms Parry well as she steps up into this promotions position and joins the executive team at the school.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR STUDENTS

  1. Callum Lawrence for his outstanding art work – photographed above.  His class is going to work on an even larger mural to be located in the front foyer for 2010.
  2. Dana and Holly Hutchison who are participating in the Northern Sydney Regional Choir
  3. Ruan Vlok, Olivia Rosebery and Ellie Langer of year 12, who have had their work selected for Manly Art Gallery Express Yourself Exhibition for 2010 and Ellie’s work has been chosen for inclusion on the invitation for the exhibition.
  4. Guillaume Pitot, Joel Smithy, Michael Galloway and Sanni Khatewodo who contributed to our school tree planting as part of their work on the Environment Team.  It is wonderful seeing students who are committee to making a tangible difference to our school environment.

    IN THE COMING WEEKS
  • Next week all year 10 students will be interviewed early in the week regarding their subject choices for year 11, 2010.
  • The welfare team is addressing issues in relation to Promoting Positive Student Behaviour, and I would encourage all parents of year 7 and 9 students to check for student permission notes to attend specific programs.
  • On Tuesday 10th November at 7.00pm the Board of Studies Liaison Officer – Kim Owens will be coming to speak to our year 11 students who have just started their HSC courses.  This is a special invitation for parents, guardians and students.  More information will be sent by Mrs McDermott.

SENIOR BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM

Congratulations to the combined Senior Boys Basketball team that competed in the Sydney boys Basketball Tournament in the recent holidays. Giving up two days of vacation and competing against much bigger schools, the Killarney boys managed to defeat Cranbrook in their pool games but did not progress to the quarter finals this year. David Wood, John Kim, and Caywood Hesson were the leading players but special thanks also to Cameron Ludowyke, Ned Anderson, David Wood, Megan Batchelor, Stephanie Hickman, Tash Samuels and their parents (especially), for looking after our Melbourne High guests for 2 days - your hospitality and skill in helping with the smooth running of the Tournament was greatly appreciated. Newington College won both divisions of the tournament.

FASHION HAVEN FOR ALL

In the past, finding that special, one-of stunner meant shopping around town for days and steeling yourself to look at the price tag.  Luckily for the local Forestville girls (of all ages) we can now enjoy a designer look and feel without breaking the bank.   HAVEN (the sister store to Pink at Belrose) has recently opened up a sheik new boutique at 61 The Centre Darley street (opposite the pre school) side of Forestville Shopping Centre and it's unmissable if you're looking for something different for that formal or informal occasion.  Many mums and daughters are already regulars at HAVEN.  No surprise when you see what's instore.
