FAREWELL AND GOOD LUCK TO YEAR 12 2009 |

This week we said farewell to the HSC class of 2009. They had a very positive end to their education here at Killarney Heights and I would like to commend them all for their maturity on graduation day and their sense of fun on the day before. The outfits were amazing – see the photos attached.
It has been quite a journey from the boisterous year 7’s that they obviously were in 2004 – to the mature young adults that we saw graduate this week.
Good luck year 12 on behalf of all staff and fellow students here at Killarney Heights High. We look forward to hearing great news at the end of year when the HSC results are released and look forward to many of you coming to join the staff for morning tea on Thursday 18th December 2009 at 11.00am to share the news of your ATAR results.
It is interesting to note that of our HSC class of 2009 has:
2 students completing 13 units of study – each with one extension course
19 students completing 12 units of study
16 students completing 11 units of study
The remaining students completing 10 units of study or less. (This includes students have accelerated already or those who are doing Pathways or students in year 10 and 11 who are accelerating this year).
FOR YEAR 10
After the Trial School Certificate Examinations next term, Ms McDermott will be organizing the meetings with Year 10 students to discuss their patterns of study for the HSC as soon as the Year 11 timetable blocks of subjects are finalized with the timetable team. At this stage any subjects with small students numbers ie. less than 10 students – with the exception of Music 2 will not be running.
Ms Van Gogh has been trying to meet with those students who have clashes in their timetable allocation at this stage, now that the team has tried to find the best fit to accommodate the 160 different demands of our students.
It is important to remind students that we have a staffing ratio to accommodate the delivery of 12 units of study for students in both years 11 and 12 and the school is committed to being able to provide full face to face teaching for all of year 12 classes even where the student numbers may decline significantly when many students choose to study less than 12 units for the HSC. We are also committed to the provision of extension 1 and 2 courses for our year 12 students regardless of the number of candidates. We endeavour to cater for the full range of students but accept that in providing choice to students, not everyone may be 100 per cent satisfied with the options that are available.
Once those students with timetable clashes have been interviewed, Ms Van Gogh will then publish the full list of allocations and students may then discuss with her any changes that they may like to make, subject to space being available in those classes.
I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy spring break and remind all families that school returns on Monday 19th October 2009 for both students and staff.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S AWARD SCHEME |
BRONZE ADVENTUROUS JOURNEY

The Duke’s has thirty one new enrolments this year, and all of them organised their time so they could join the first Adventurous Journey from 27th to 28th September. Being a practice expedition it was designed to develop skills in planning, self-sufficiency, safety, teamwork, navigation and camp-craft.
with full packs six teams traversed some of the local bush tracks, spent the night at Manly Dam reserve then found their way home again. Many of the teams took full advantage of the “practice” aspect of the expedition by taking the opportunity to make poor navigational decisions then eventually working out how to correct them – well done, you know who you are!
All students were cheerful, supportive of each other and seemed to enjoy the experience – at least after the packs were off their shoulders. Special thanks must go to Mr Rakicic and Mr Falk who provided patient and experienced assistance. Also I would like to thank the large flock of very loud white cockatoos that cleverly chose the noisiest girls’ tent as the location for the 4 am chorus.

YOUNG TOASTMASTERS, 2009 |
Congratulations to all students who participated in the 2009 Young Toastmasters Course this year. In the final meeting of the year Ms Jackson and I thoroughly enjoyed the fantastic display of oral strength of our many students, ranging from Year 7 to 12. Special congratulations to Gabriel Maier of Year 10, who was awarded the best Table Topic, an impromptu speaking task in which each student participates.
In the speech final, six students competed for the Junior Toastmasters Trophy. Johannes Michael of Year 10 spoke about honesty and ethics in the law and discussed the case of “Hurricane” Reuben Carter. Alan Issaia, of Year 10’s speech was entitled “Title can’t be spoken as it is of National Security”. Gabrielle Hardy spoke about procrastination and the detrimental effects of delaying the inevitable for high school students, but her conclusion is an inspiring reminder for us all: “where there’s a will, there’s a way. How else do you think this speech was written?” Karen Shao discussed “Personal Value” in which she explained the impact of coming to Australia as an overseas student and having to cope with the communications problems, as well as finding edible food, coping with a new system of measurement, money and much more. She concluded that whatever happens to us or how down we feel, we never lose our innate value and by taking up the challenges facing us, we can gain a true understanding of our personal worth. Lucas Moctezuma spoke about “Minorities” and talked about the discrimination faced by minority groups in our society, Emma Cooke of Year 9 who asked the question “Do celebrities have the responsibility to be role models?” Her speech looked at the image of celebrities and the detrimental effect that image making can have on adolescents, particularly contributing to conditions such as anorexia nervosa.

The standard of the speeches was very high and all of the speakers were of an outstanding quality in their use of voice, gesture and in the confidence with which they articulated their ideas. Congratulations to Karen Shao, the winner of the Speech competition and to Johannes Michael, who was runner-up. Congratulations, too to Johannes, on receiving the trophy for contribution to the Toastmasters club, for his help with our course and his speech at a community function earlier this year.
Once again, we are indebted to The Forest Toastmasters Club and particularly Derek Rowland and Brian Hanscombe, for the continuation of such a valuable course at Killarney Heights High School.

BAND NEWS
|

This term, KHHS concert bands performed workshops at local Primary schools. Our bands were well received at Willoughby, Forestville and Killarney Heights public schools. Out students performed brilliantly and were extremely helpful and patient to the relatively inexperienced Primary school students.

The following pictures were taken at our workshop at FPS. Firstly, the Intermediate Concert band performed “Anchors Aweigh” and “Bella’s Lullaby” followed by the Advanced Band conducted by Mark Pinner. They performed “Soaring” by David Schaefer. Then 3 bands performed together a couple of pieces to the school. Thank you to Penny Burt, the band coordinator at FPS, and Mark Pinner, advanced Band conductor here at KHHS. I look forward to getting ready to pack my board shorts and head to Port Stephens in December!

FASHION HAVEN FOR ALL
|
In the past, finding that special, one-of stunner meant shopping around town for days and steeling yourself to look at the price tag. Luckily for the local Forestville girls (of all ages) we can now enjoy a designer look and feel without breaking the bank. HAVEN (the sister store to Pink at Belrose) has recently opened up a sheik new boutique at 61 The Centre Darley street (opposite the pre school) side of Forestville Shopping Centre and it's unmissable if you're looking for something different for that formal or informal occasion. Many mums and daughters are already regulars at HAVEN. No surprise when you see what's instore. |
