REPORTING THE NEWS AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS

Yesterday all students were given a copy of the 2008 Annual School Report. (Check your child’s bag  for your copy.....if they haven’t given it to you already.)This provides a record of our achievements last year and our future directions under our 2009 – 2011 Strategic Plan.  I would like to especially thank all of the Executive team, our sports coordinator Ms Parry, Ms Morrison for her work with the front cover layout and Mrs Maddrell in the office with her persistence in preparing the final document.

Our four key targets for 2009 are:

  1. Improving student learning
  2. Student and staff engagement
  3. Increase the understanding and use of ICT
  4. Creating Community and business links that increase community representation.

As part of Target 1 we will be training all students, next week, in the use of the “Your Tutor” online tutoring service which the school in conjunction with the P&C are funding at a cost of $18 000, as a 12 month trial.  The program is being offered at a reduced rate for this first year as we are the first public school in NSW to take up this opportunity.  This is where all of our students are benefiting from the P&C contributions that are made by our parents each year.

I would like to thank all of those parents who have made their contributions this year and remind everyone that the end of financial year is coming soon and that half of your P&C contribution is tax deductible because it is going into the building fund.  If you haven’t finalised your contributions – please get them to the office before 30th June 2009, to use your receipt for this year’s tax return.

Our work on Target 2 will be shown on 29th June at our Annual Recognition Night.  This is an important opportunity to affirm students, staff and community members who demonstrate our school values in a variety of ways.

We are also developing a Year 8 research activity which will provide an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and skills to real world situations that are of importance to our school and community.

One other area of Student engagement was the Annual Principal’s Art Competition where students this year were asked to design murals for each sporting house.  The winners of this competition are James Wang of year 10 and Felicity Luttman of Year 9.  Both students had excellent design concepts for all four houses.  It was decided that two designs each would be commissioned into murals that they will prepare and paint – with a team of other students.  The final murals will be mounted in each block of the school as part of promoting house and school spirit.  James’ designs for Ross and Connaire and Felicity’s designs for Tara and Kerry will be started before the end of term and we hope to have a special unveiling event to celebrate this work.  Congratulations to all students who participated in this year’s competition.

Final photos of these murals will be used on the front cover of the junior school diaries for 2010.

The Annual Photography Competition saw the creation of some amazing work.  The prize winners were:

First – James Mullins – Year 12
Second – Dayne Morgan – Year 12
Third – Riana Head Toussant – Year 11
Highly Commended – Chloe Wilson – Year 7

The first prize winner’s work will be incorporated into the cover for the senior diary for 2010.

Having seen the high standard of photography work in this competition we are investigating the possibility of creating a 2010 calendar incorporating Year 12 student photographs.

The key new item in relation to Target 3 – Increasing use of ICT – is the federal funding of the Digital Education Revolution and the NSW roll out of new Lenovo laptops to Year 9 students later this year.  We have been notified of our laptop allocation for students and that we will receive an initial 24 laptops for teacher use.  There will be a lot of school organisation and planning that will occur prior to the laptops being issued to students in late term 3 or early term 4.

In order to increase student consultation and input into the use of laptops for learning I have obtained a list of nine interested student volunteers - eight in year 9 (4 boys and 4 girls) and one boy in Year 8 to be part of my student reference group.  Their brief will be to work with myself, the teacher librarian Ms Greenwell and the Head Teachers in sourcing and testing a variety of teaching and learning materials that will support the Year 9 courses in term 4 this year.  They will be also looking at some of the ways that students can demonstrate their learning using this technology.  This will aid us in improving the variety of assessment instruments that we can use with students to assess their learning achievement .

During Term 3 there will be a demonstration evening of the new laptops for all interested parents.

COMMUNITY CONSULTATION
As part of Target 4 – Increasing community participation I would like to thank our parent representatives on two of our school standing committees – Anya Johnson – on the Enrolment Committee and Di Finch on the School Finance Committee.

Following our P&C meeting this week it has been decided to alter the school’s enrolment policy for 2010.  This will involve the interchange of criteria 2 and 3.  The amended policy will still have 1. Curriculum and subject choice (like languages) , but the new ....2 Siblings and 3. Co-curricular programs (like band, musical and performing arts programs, gifted and talented sports programs).  As noted previously, a number of existing families nearly missed out on receiving an offer of placement for younger children applying to come to the school for year 7 2010, possibly because they had not read the school enrolment policy and competition for offers of placement had not been so keen in the past.

The new policy will be listed on the website – for the benefit of prospective enrolments from the beginning of 2010.

As part of our ongoing consultation the next P & C meeting will be discussing the schools current  “Student Welfare, good discipline and effective learning policy”.  Once this is finalised in consultation with teachers, parents and student representative groups, it will be published on the school’s website.

Our next School Finance Committee meeting will be addressing two key issues:

  1. Other technology needs of the school – including finalising the orders of any remaining Interactive whiteboards (IWBs) and/or the data projectors – so that all remaining classrooms that do not currently have these projectors or IWBs will be connected to our network by next year – if not sooner – depending upon available funds – from all sources, including P&C contributions.
  2. Buildings. The state of the science laboratories is an ongoing issue for us.  We are still trying to find out whether we are scheduled to get any or all of our labs. upgraded as part of the NSW government 4 year program of upgrading laboratories across the state

It is obvious that neither the hall or our library currently meet the needs of the school.  We are investigating options to upgrade our facilities.  The great challenge is that what we desire is rated as being beyond school entitlement according to the Asset Management Unit of the Department of Education. This may mean that major fundraising will be necessary for enable us to provide to quality of facilities that we desire for our students.

HAVE YOU BOUGHT YOUR TICKETS FOR THE SCHOOL MUSICAL?
Just a reminder – The Little Shop of Horrors – school musical is on Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd July 2009.  Tickets are available from the office at a cost of $15.00 for students and $20.00 for adults.  It would be wonderful to have at least two members from every school family in attendance over the two evenings. I would like to thank Mr Evanoff and Mr Wood for all of their work and many hours of rehearsal time given to this terrific show.

CONGRATULATIONS:

  1. The Frenchs Forest  Rotary Club Youth Speaks competition was held  on Monday Night.  First place was won by  our team of Johannes Michael, Lucas Moctezuma and Jasper Friedman.  Well done.  Thank you to their coach and mentor Ms Reid who came rushing back to the Monday night P&C meeting to share the good news.
  2. Our Year 11 debating team –are now the zone champions
  3. Ms Van Gogh who coached the Sydney North opens netball team to be undefeated champions of the NSW CHS carnival this week.   This is the first win for Sydney North since 2004. All of the extra training that MS Van Gogh organised for her team certainly paid dividends.
  4. To Ms Parry and the staff who assisted at the Zone Athletics carnival yesterday – in such challenging weather conditions.  Their enthusiasm and dedication to the fitness and sporting achievements of our students is greatly appreciated.
  5. To the KHHS members of the Step To the Future organising committee for the Sydney Forums this month - Emma Cooke, Chantelle Drake, Madeline Frazer and Tahlia Geach for the junior program and Sean Sadimoen for the senior program.  All of our students who attended the forums had the opportunity to hear a range of inspiring speakers from the media, sports and the arts on the day were very appreciative of the efforts of the organising committee.

INFORMATION FOR YEAR 10 PARENTS

Congratulations to all the year 10 students who participated in the Work Experience program. It was a very positive and rewarding experience for many of our students and we had some excellent feedback from many employers. Well done year 10!!

Subject Selection
A reminder to all Year 10’s that subject selection for year 11 is coming up very quickly. It is a good idea if parents can go along to some of the information evenings put on by the universities to help students make decisions about which courses to take in Years 11 and 12. If you plan to apply for university you should select HSC courses that both achieve an ATAR and keep your options open for entry to a range of courses. Check out each University’s website for more information.

In the next two weeks students in year 10 will be attending subject selection information seminars during class time where they will be given information about the various subjects offered here at KHHS. Early in term 3, parents and students will attend an information evening where students will choose their subjects for years 11 and 12.

YEAR 12 ADVISER'S REPORT

All year 12’s have been issued with their half yearly report. If you have not received your child’s report please do not hesitate to ring the school on 9451 7005. All students have a MENTOR so now that they have received their reports it may be a good time to see your mentor and discuss your progress, achievements, strategies or concerns.

At assembly this week students received their official copy of the HSC Examination Timetable. This is also available on the BOS website. Check www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au

An “Advice to parents” pamphlet was also distributed. The BOS website is a very useful website and contains details of courses, past examinations and more.

In 2009, the Universitites Admission Index(UAI) for NSW and ACT is changing to the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). The number given to the maximum rank in NSW and ACT will now be an ATAR of 99.95, as opposed to a UAI of 100. The rules for the ATAR are exactly the same as for the UAI. The scaling process will be the same, the rank order of students will be the same and the same applicants will be selected for the same courses. Any small change in an ATAR compared to a UAI will see an equivalent change in the course cut-off.

The following information about the change from UAI to ATAR, and about the change itself, is available to download from the UAC website www.uac.edu.au/atar/ or phone for more information

The Northern Beaches Expo was held at the salubrious Miramare Gardens at Terrey Hills on the 21st May. Unfortunately the rain prevented us from enjoying the beautiful surroundings however it was a very useful opportunity for our students to explore their post school options.  Most of the students and some of the parents that attended were able to pick up an array of information from the various universities represented, TAFES, private providers and some of the local employers. It was a very interesting and informative event.

BOYS OPEN TOUCH FOOTBALL KNOCKOUT

The team travelled to The Entrance on Tuesday 9th June for their Round 5 game against Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College.  It was a long day to get there and back by train and bus, but the effort was rewarded with a thrilling win: 10-9.

Tuggerah was a well-drilled and skilful side who really put the question to Killarney Heights as we struggled to mount an effective defence.  The contest was tied with just a few minutes to go before David Tran was set-up to score the game-breaker, after which we held on for a narrow victory.  Man of the match has to be Nathan Wong who dominated play and only substituted off at the very end.

Well done team for finishing in the top 16 in the State!  The next game will be a play-off for an entry into the state carnival in August.  Go Killarney!

The team that played on June 9th was: David Tran, Jason Harry, Nathan Wong, Garth Ambrose, Luc Hona, Kieren Payne, Tim Zablotskii, Tom Caruthers, David Hudson, Alex Northam, Dominic Lamaro and Jeremy Clayton.  Many thanks to Mr New who travelled with the team at such short notice.

SCRIPTURE SEMINARS

Each term Religious Education (RE) seminars are held at Killarney Heights High.  The seminars are run by representatives of local churches, and run for 1 period for each Year group.  This Term the date for the seminars is Friday 26th June and includes Catholic, Combined Christian and Bahai.

Students will bring home a note from roll call.  There is a return slip that is necessary only should a student’s parents wish to specify a particular seminar, or elect for their child to not attend a seminar.  This applies to Years 7-10.

Years 11 & 12 students may make the choice to not attend seminars and in this case are required to attend normal classes.

Human Swine Flu Information Sheet

Australia is entering a new phase in our response to human swine flu, known as PROTECT.

The change in approach is because the virus strain is currently not as virulent as anticipated.

Generally the virus produces a mild disease in most people, a severe disease in some, and a moderate effect overall.

This year it is likely many more people will come down with flu-like-illnesses than in recent winter flu seasons because fewer people will have immunity to the human swine flu virus.

The aims of the PROTECT phase are to ensure that people at an increased risk of complications from influenza are treated early to try to prevent severe illness from developing, and to help control outbreaks in schools and other institutions.

On the advice of NSW Health we no longer need to exclude staff or students who have been to an area where there is known community or school transmission of human swine flu.

Any staff member or student who has been excluded from school and who does not have flu symptoms can return to school immediately.

The school exclusion policy was inconvenient but it helped to limit the spread of disease in NSW schools.

As the number of cases of swine flu increases in the community, school exclusions and closures are unlikely to help in limiting the spread of disease as many more children will catch swine flu outside school rather than in school.

The NSW Department of Health thanks the parents and carers of NSW school students for their co-operation with these measures while they were in place.

We still need to take steps to minimise the transmission of the virus in the community as some people in our school community remain at increased risk of complications from influenza.

Instead of excluding people who may have been to an affected area, or who have been in contact with a person with confirmed human swine influenza, we will now be asking any person with flu symptoms to stay at home until they are well.

ny student who identifies that they are unwell, or is displaying flu-like symptoms will be sent to a sick-bay area and their parent or carer will be called to take them home.

Please watch carefully for any signs or symptoms of flu-like illness in your child.  These symptoms include fever, cough, tiredness, muscle aches, sore throat, chills or shortness of breath. NSW Health has advised if you or your child develops flu-like symptoms you should seek the advice of your family doctor as you would with any other illness.

Parents have an important role to play in helping their children understand and follow the government hygiene advice. Your help to do this is appreciated.

We understand there may be some ongoing concern in school communities. However, we can reassure you that we have taken, and will continue to act on advice we receive from NSW Health to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of our staff and students.

You can get additional health information from the H1N1 Influenza 09 section of the NSW Health website at: http://www.emergency.health.nsw.gov.au/swineflu/index.asp.

EDUCATIONAL WORLD TRAVEL OPPORTUNITY

The G'DAY USA Program is a short term Cultural Exchange which offers High School students and staff the opportunity to travel, as a group, to the USA during the school holidays.

Educational World Travel has been offering the "G'Day USA Program" to High School students since 1988. Since that time we have become one of the largest Exchange Organisations operating in Australia.

A Typical Cultural Exchange of 20 days includes the following;-
* Being hosted by American families from a selected American high school
* Attending an American school
* Sightseeing of your Host City
* Visiting Los Angeles & San Francisco
* Disneyland, Universal Studios, Knotts Berry Farm, Tijuana (Mexico)
* San Francisco, Golden Gate Bridge

Living with an American family provides young Australians with a greater awareness of the differences between our cultures. Additionally, of particular importance is the educational benefit gained from attending school classes with the host students and becoming involved in class activities on a first hand basis.

The Program is invaluable in providing students with a greater sense of responsibility, self reliance and self esteem. Travellers return with an increased awareness of the importance of working cohesively in a team environment.

What will students gain from this experience with the G'Day USA Cultural Exchange?

  • Knowledge
  • Friendship
  • Sense of independence
  • You only live once, enjoy it!
  • Travelling on my own
  • Clothes!
  • A feeling of knowing I will never, ever forget how much fun I had in 18 days
  • Got to know other students that I would normally not have known
  • Managing my money
  • Responsibility
  • Confidence
  • A new home!
  • How to roller blade!
  • A knowledge of what it is like to live in the United States
  • The group leaders were fantastic and are now friends
  • Friends at other Colleges who travelled with us
  • The experience of going overseas without my parents
  • Pen pals
  • A better understanding of the world
